Igor Stravisnky: The Greates Composer winter course offered at the Estes Park Senior Center

January 4, 2010

The music of twentieth century composer Igor Stravinsky is the focus of the Estes Park Senior Center’s winter music series taught by local resident Dr. Derald DeYoung.  The five-week course begins Thursday, January 14, 2010.  The course is offered from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. each Thursday through February 11, 2009 and will be held at the Estes Park Museum meeting room, 200 Fourth Street.  The total fee for all five sessions is $13.50 for members of Estes Park Senior Citizens Center Inc. and $25.50 for non-members.  Registration can be completed at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street with cash or check payable to the Town of Estes Park.

Igor Stravinsky: The greatest composer is the fifth music series offered by Dr. DeYoung with previous courses focusing on the music of Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler and Tchaikovsky.  This is the first course to explore a twentieth century composer.  DeYoung will present Stravinsky's most famous pieces:  The Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring as well as a sampling of his later works.  The course will also touch on the evolution of music during this period.

According to Dr. DeYoung, “The music of Stravinsky is very accessible to listeners because it contains Russian folk music and much of it tells a story as it was composed for the ballet.  It is full of color and exuberance and has a great appeal to the general audience.”  This course will help the listener hear what is happening in the music and therefore, no formal music background is necessary.  DeYoung recommends that students have “only a desire to enjoy some of the finest music written in the twentieth century.”

Dr. Derald DeYoung is Professor of Music, Emeritus from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan --where he taught for 27 years.  He retired in 2005 to Estes Park, where he lives full-time.

Igor Stravinsky: The Greatest Composer

Winter course series offered through Estes Park Senior Center.

December 1, 2009

“Top Ten Stretches for Those Over Age 50” – a free program at the Senior Center

November 17, 2009

The world would be less uptight if people could bend over to tie their shoes or pick up their paper without experiencing joint pain and muscle stiffness.  Maybe that sounds extreme, however a regular routine of stretching and flexibility have proven health benefits.

The Estes Park Senior Center and MedX of Estes are offering a free program “The Top Ten Stretches for Those over Age 50” on Wednesday, December 2, 2009.  Fitness professional Deb Holmes will present this program at 1:00 p.m. in the Tebow Room of the Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. The program will feature simple stretching exercises that may help to maintain or improve flexibility, comfort and ease of movement.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “You can stretch anytime, anywhere.  Stretching increases flexibility, improves range of motion and circulation and relieves stress.”  Flexibility is one of the more important factors affecting quality of life as people grow older.   People don’t automatically lose flexibility as they age but we do develop habits and routines that affect good posture and proper body alignment.

Deb Holmes and her husband Bryon are co-owners of MedX of Estes.  Deb holds a bachelors degree in Exercise Science and a Masters in Health Science Education from the University of Florida.  Deb is actively involved in fitness education in the community.  She operates the Tri Fit exercise program at the Senior Center and conducts fitness challenges, personal training and exercise classes at MedX. Deb writes a weekly article called "High Altitude Health" in the Trail Plus every Friday and provides a weekly radio program on KEPL1470 on Thursdays at 9:10 am.  Deb is the president of the Estes Park Quota Club and serves on the board of directors for the EP Swim Club.  Her interests include her three children and their busy schedules, recently completing her 12th season as head coach for the Estes Park Middle School swimming and diving teams.

Boulder's Dinner Theatre performs "Singin in the Rain" - a perfect holiday gift

November 16, 2009

Are you looking for the perfect holiday gift?  Dinner theatres provide a delightful social atmosphere, delicious food and outstanding musical entertainment.   This season, consider stress-free travel with the Estes Park Senior Center to the Boulder’s Dinner Theatre production of “Singin in the Rain” as part of your holiday celebration.   The Senior Center reserved excellent seats for a matinee performance of the acclaimed musical on Sunday, January 31, 2010.  The day trip departs at 11:00 a.m. and returns to Estes Park at approximately 5:30 p.m.  The fee is $67.50 for members of Estes Park Senior Citizens Center Inc. or $69.50 for non-members and includes transportation, show ticket, complete dinner, tax and gratuity.  Drinks or cocktails are extra.

Boulder’s Dinner Theatre describes the musical as one it’s funniest and most enjoyable productions:  “Singin’ in the Rain” packs in some of the funniest scenes and most enjoyable singin’, dancin’ and splashin’ about in a rain puddle.”   The show features music by Nacio Herb Brown and lyrics by Arthur Freed with songs like: “Fit as a Fiddle”, “Make ‘Em Laugh”, “Moses Supposes”,  “Good Mornin’” and of course, “Singin in the Rain.”

“Singin in the Rain “is a musical set in Hollywood in the waning days of the silent screen era. The show focuses on romantic lead Don Lockwood, his sidekick Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden and Lockwood’s leading lady, Lina Lamont.  Lamont’s less-than-musical vocal tones make her an unlikely candidate for stardom in talking pictures.

The deadline for registration is Monday, January 4, 2010. Please register at the Senior Center with payment by cash or check payable to the Town of Estes Park.   Contact the Senior Center for more information, 586-2996.   For more information about Boulder’s Dinner Theatre, visit their website at www.bouldersdinnertheatre.com.

Senior Center Flu Shot Clinic Cancelled on October 14

October 5, 2009

The flu shot clinic scheduled for October 14 at the Estes Park Senior Center is cancelled due to unexpected delays in seasonal flu vaccine delivery.  By early November, seasonal flu vaccines are expected to be plentiful again.  For more information, individuals should contact a physician or the Larimer County Department of Health and the Environment at 970-577-2050.

With increasing cases of H1N1 flu, or “swine” flu, public health agencies have prioritized the production and distribution of the H1N1 flu vaccination over that of seasonal flu as there is currently no circulation of the seasonal flu.  The first cases of seasonal flu are typically seen in November, with illnesses peaking in January and February.

Approximately 95 doses of seasonal flu vaccine were available at a clinic held October 7 at the Senior Center. The clinic was co-sponsored by the Senior Center and the Estes Park Medical Center (EPMC); Family Medical Center nurses administered vaccinations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend getting a seasonal flu vaccine as soon it becomes available. This is the first and most important step in protecting against seasonal flu.  Annual seasonal flu vaccination is particularly important for people with a high risk of serious flu complications including young children, pregnant women, individuals with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart or lung disease and older adults.

The seasonal flu vaccine does not protect against H1N1 flu.  A separate H1N1 vaccine is likely to be available during October through the Larimer County Department of Health and the Environment.  The CDC recommends the H1N1 vaccine, in addition to a seasonal flu shot, for individuals who are at the greatest risk for H1N1 infection or serious complications.  These groups include children, young adults ages 19 to 24, pregnant women and adults ages 25 to 64 with chronic health conditions. Healthcare workers and individuals who are in close contact with infants less than six months of age should also get vaccinated for H1N1 flu.  For more information on both seasonal flu and H1N1 flu, please visit www.flu.gov.
